The open source edition basically just stopped in time, complete with whatever bugs
existed at that time.

It will work in production, until it doesn't.  At which point he will have no recourse,
because whatever miniscule open-source community that might have existed is
now long gone.

He can take the gamble, but he'll want to have a plan B strategy lined up for when
they run into a showstopper bug of some sort.
