I think that's a rant we should hear someday :-)

As a DBA I find the suggestion that it's no longer a thing mildly disturbing... there must have been plenty of disaster situations worldwide when management have been glad to have a DBA around.
Dev-Ops is a "thing" these days, which might include DB management tasks. I'd say that also works the other way round to some degree, most DBAs will have complimentary skills useful in liaising with their development and sys admin neighbours.

Re the Oxford position - a lack of applicants from an Ingres background did raise an eyebrow given how much we use Ingres, but various other DBMS engines are used within these walls too. Finding a specialist in a technology that's less familiar to the Ingres guys and having everyone learn from each other makes some sense.
If that's what comes to pass, the Ingres world grows by one - and who knows maybe we'd end up with a new advocate too.
