[Info-ingres] So we advertised for a new DBA...?

I’m surprised to hear Linux was an issue. Being regarded as ‘not Windows’ is surely a plus?

We had to fight to get that salary approved. I suspect the Uni operates on the thought that we’re such a prestigious institution that people should pay to work here.

Hi Marty;

I would have said it was probably a combination of:

  * Linux...where I work we have been using Linux for about 5 years...and it's still regarded as 'not Windows'
  * Ingres - not a lot of visibility these days...forget the technical quality - how many times do you hear about Ingres? Postgres, yes; SQL server - ad nauseam; MySQL - of course; Db2 and Ingres..rarely.
  *   Salary - probably a little low

Hell, I would likely have applied if I were nearby, did not have an existing DBA job, and was not thinking of retiring this year - it sounded fun.

Hi All,

I’m curious.

We (aka Oxford University) advertised for a new DBA. The position was offered with a salary of up to £47,722pa, full time, 3 years fixed in the first instance. The advert did mention we are mainly Ingres on Linux but with other engines (Postgres, SQL Server) and platforms.

Not one person with Ingres DBA experience applied.

Why? Seriously, I was disappointed.

Does anyone have any thoughts they’d like to share on that?
