I was once told a database name had to be a valid directory name on
all supported platforms--which makes (a sort of) sense.

What makes less sense is that there would still be a supported
platform with such a small upper limit on the length of directory
names!

My first guess was that the limit comes from an old version of VMS,
but a quick Google tells me the limit is/was 39 characters.

Ingres did once run on MVS. But Google tells me (or seems to tell me)
the limit on MVS was 8 (really?! 8?) characters. If so that kinda
pokes a hole in my first sentence!
