I dunno.   It might be a bit tricky in the presence of outer joining, subselects, etc
but surely there is some more or less reasonable way to interpret them that
would not be a great burden.

I expect that most of the reason was simple inertia, perhaps plus the notion
that views would do more or less the same thing.
