Sounds like you made some progress :-)

I've no idea/experience with Joomla. The community website from around 2006 was Mediawiki with Ingres DBMS, not sure about after that.

I tend to avoid trying to build things unless I really need to which is why I like being able to apt-get/yum/etc. install things which is the approach the ODBC with PHP article you found recommends.

If the ODBCSYSINI (etc.) environment is being lost you can always put ODBC config in the default system ini files (note requires root access).

You mentioned DAS. I know there are some php to jdbc bridges but I've not played with any of them. I know ODBC works, if you do get JDBC working I'd love to read about it. Thanks for sharing your progress so far!
