Mad? It was positively bonkers! It got us out of a sticky problem in a just-gone-live system though, as I recall.
Some 6.5 years later, hopefully we'll very soon have the ability to generate statistics from within an Ingres SQL session without employing such dubious methods... at which point the OME function in question can undergo the C code equivalent of being ceremoniously hung, drawn and quartered.
(We must start thinking up a suitable comment for that particular git commit).
