wflor etc - were used in event flag processing - I remember using them to
write screen contents whilst waiting for the next the database fetch -
great stuff. No doubt UNIX has all of this but things are so fast nowadays
these tricks no longer required ....
Vaxes in 1977 were slow beasts ...............

the joy of wflor [Wait for logical or ] wfland and asychronous traps in
fortran on VMS and in DCL the brilliance of batch processing.
Nowadays operating systems to me are largely a means to an end unlike in
the past :-)

As a one-time occassional VMS user myself I can assure you that bash and
its kin will grow on you. Anyone willing to endure the limitations of
Windows cmd and the macaronic swags and swirls of Windows PowerShell
should find it's a reasonable middle way. Persevere.
